Tavern on the Green, 2003

Where ladies once lunched, you can get drunk.

After plans for Tavern on the Green to reopen under new management fell through, the city has been preparing to turn the space into a snack bar and visitor’s center. At a meeting on Monday, the city unveiled preliminary plans to set up carts in the restaurant’s courtyard, including a possible beer, wine or liquor cart, DNAinfo reported. (The city is always willing to ignore its own rules against having alcohol in the parks, as long as it’s the one making the money.)

Another cart could serve desserts, and the city might also put a bike rental station outside the restaurant. The Central Parks Conservancy will also open a visitor’s center at the restaurant.

The plans are still preliminary. Before installing any carts, the parks department will consult the community board.
