Brewer Holding Fundraiser for West-Park Presbyterian

westpark2Gale Brewer is hosting a fundraiser on Wednesday night for West-Park Presbyterian, the 120-year-old church at 86th and Amsterdam that became a landmark in May over the objections of its congregation.

Brewer had pledged to help restore the church after the congregation said that it could not pay for restoration work to the building. The building is in such bad shape that the congregation has to attend services elsewhere. The church actually put the building up for sale earlier this year, but Brewer said in an email that West-Park Presbyterian will continue to be a church and the building’s restoration will be financed by the community. The interior restoration, however, is the responsibility of the church, possibly in partnership with a nonprofit organizations, she said.

The fundraiser will be held at the Belnord, another landmarked building at 225 West 86th Street from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday and dessert will be provided. If you cannot attend the fundraiser and want to donate, send a check to the New York Landmarks Conservancy, One Whitehall Street, New York, NY 10004 att: WPPC. Landmarks West, Friends of West Park and other groups are also participating.

Brewer herself wrote a $1,000 check to the New York Landmarks Conservancy, which will oversee the restoration work. It could be the first step to healing the wounds brought on by the landmarking battle. Opponents of the landmark decision put up graffiti denouncing Brewer on the church and the scaffolding outside of it before the vote in the City Council.
