Russian Ballerina Punched, Mugged at Amsterdam Houses

osipovaNatalia Osipova, a ballerina with Russia’s famous Bolshoi Ballet, was punched in the face and robbed while walking through the Amsterdam Houses next to Lincoln Center at 63rd Street around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The two teenagers who attacked her stole her pointe ballet shoes, worth about $100, and a hammer used to shape the shoes, the New York Times reported. Osipova is still scheduled to perform on Saturday in Sleeping Beauty with the American Ballet Theater, and is scheduled to play Juliet in Romeo and Juliet at the Theater on July 10. Check out her website here.

The muggers apparently haven’t been caught.

In a side note, why is it that muggers so often steal things that have deep personal significance to the victim, but no use at all to the thief? Two teenage boys with ballet shoes?

There has been an increased amount of thug like people around the Amsterdam Projects. Something needs to be done ASAP. The neighborhood has seriously improved over the years and now is home to many middle and upper class residents. I stronger thinl there should be more police on patrol and that the NYPD should install police cameras from 57th st to 72nd street Amserdam and West End.
