UWS Super is a Sex Offender; Residents Not so Happy

by Avi - February 1, 2010 at 2:41 pm -

A superintendent who oversees buildings on West 73rd and 75th Streets is a Level 3 sex offender who has been convicted of raping children, the New York Post reported today. William Barnason, 57, who is in charge of 144 West 73rd Street, as well as 140 and 142 75th Street, was sentenced in 1987 to 10 to 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to rape, sodomy and sexual abuse charges in relation to attacks on three girls between the ages of 5 and 7 on Long Island, according to the Post.

The Post story details allegations by current tenants in his buildings who say that Barnason has propositioned them for sex in exchange for help with rent. Barnason wouldn’t talk to the Post and the landlord he works for, Stanley Katz, said he didn’t know about Barnason’s past until recently and there were no plans to dismiss him. Um, supers tend to keep apartment keys, right? That seems like a bad thing.

This Stanley Katz is an idiot. How dare he put the safety of the tenants into the hands of this monster, William Barnason . . . . and look the other way when tenants complain about his predator nature AND CRIMINAL RECORD. As a tenant in Arizona I am soooooo glad our management company screens workers, vendors and tenants alike with Crimshield. We used to have huge problems with theft as well as sex offenders and rape in our area. Thank God we have new management that is making our small complex a safer community. They screen everybody from workers, vendors and new move-ins. I can finally sleep good at night.
