New Trader Joe’s Building Called “A Boxy Tedious Mess”

The Real Deal’s architecture critic James Gardner had some unkind words for the new building at 200 West 72nd street that will house Trader Joe’s as well as a bunch of rental apartments. Gardner’s brutal review says the two buildings on the West Side of 72nd street (200 West and the Alexandria) at that massive intersection make it one of the most “ill-served” corners in Manhattan from an architecture standpoint. The building is boxy and its few flourishes do little to enliven it, Gardner writes.
“At the point where the setbacks open out, the facade becomes a sequence of ribbon windows that looks to be at best, drably functional,” he writes. (image via The Real Deal)
