Controversial Private School Expansion Gets Nod

Private school Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School won the approval of Community Board 7 on Tuesday night for an expansion into its rear yard.

The school, on 94th Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, wants to build an extension into the yard behind the school where students can gather before school or go from class to class without leaving the building. But residents said it would ruin the character of the interior courtyards on the block. The school tried to address residents’ concerns by using brick instead of glass and changing some of the design specs.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission will have the final say on the expansion because the school is in a landmarked district.
