Lincoln Center Lays Down a Lawn. On the Roof!

by Avi - November 12, 2009 at 9:57 pm -

lincolnroofThis week, the construction workers transforming Lincoln Center turned the roof of one of the buildingsĀ  at 65th Street into a grass lawn of sorts. No, you have not suddenly moved to the suburbs. The lawn, perched atop what will be the Hypar Restaurant, won’t be open to the public until May, but the workers are getting the sod down so it will take hold on the sloping roof over the winter and stay in place when it’s ready to open, a Lincoln Center rep told us. It’s all part of Lincoln Center’s plan to make the campus more accessible and attractive, and a little more green. The complex will also have a glass bridge spanning 65th Street, and all sorts of other goodies to go with its high-tech new fountain. Curbed has more pictures and commentary here, and the architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, have drawings of how they expect the site to look. (photo by Avi)

We’ll await Lincoln Center’s “lawn rules” for gathering, lounging and general decorum. I somehow don’t see a Frisbee game breaking out.

Slipi n’ Slide this summer though.
