Which Upper West Side Block Loves Bloomberg the Most?

trumpIn last week’s election, Michael Bloomberg did well on the Upper West Side and in other parts of Manhattan, particularly below 96th Street. But some local blocks apparently adore the mayor. And thanks to a handy map from the New York Times, we now know which blocks worship him the most.

Following the election the Times published an interactive map that tracks voting results block by block. You can zoom in on each block and see how many voters cast their ballots for Bloomberg and how many voted for Thompson. And the winner of the “we love Bloomberg the most” award goes to… the Trump Place buildings just South of 72nd Street off of the West Side Highway. While just 16  residents there voted for Thompson, 151 preferred Bloomberg, giving the mayor a whopping 90%-10% advantage.

As for the block that hates Bloomberg the most (or, rather, would have strongly preferred Thompson), there’s actually a tie. The block between 93rd and 94th between Broadway and Amsterdam, and the area between 62nd and 65th between West End Avenue and Columbus, both of which voted 78% to 22% for Thompson.

Fascinating. Amazing how few people vote in each district.

This is reflective of New York’s widening gap between the rich and the poor. The demographics of those blocks are reflective of the city’s chasm between the haves – who adore Bloomberg the billionaire – and the have-nots who have been totally left out of his vision of Metropolis.

The Trump buildings are multi-million dollar condos with Hudson River views and rentals where studios go for $2500 a month.

93rd and 94th between Broadway and Amsterdam is occupied by De Hostos Towers, an NYC Housing Authority project.

62nd to 65th between West End Avenue and Columbus is dominated by the Amsterdam Houses – another low income Moses Era housing project.

It’s no surprise that the wealthy adore Bloomberg and the poor despise him. The more interesting data would be where the middle class stands – what’s left of them on the Upper Westside anyway.
