Gas Leak Closes Popular Upper West Side Eatery

Good Enough to Eat, the popular home-cooking restaurant on 83rd Street and Amsterdam was forced to close on Friday because of a gas leak in its building. The restaurant, which has been around since 1981, has won critical acclaim and lots of fans — including Kevin Bacon. The New York Times initially reported that the restaurant might reopen relatively quickly, but the gas problem apparently hasn’t been resolved. The restaurant’s website says it will reopen on Nov. 3, but a message recorded on the answering machine at the restaurant makes the situation sound even more dire.
Owner and chef Carrie Levin — who told the Times the shutdown would cost her between $15,000 and $17,000 a day — sounds particularly peeved in the message.
“The city has just shut down the gas of our building and it is very hard for us to get the landlord and the city to work together to get it put back on,” she said. “If there is anybody that knows someone in the press, some landlord, a real estate agent or anybody that could help us reopen as soon as possible at our now location or anywhere else, please press 3… I hope we can reopen Good Enough to Eat really soon.”
