Stolen Painting Mailed Back to Nicholas Roerich Museum

One of the two paintings stolen two months ago from the Nicholas Roerich Museum on 107th Street near Riverside Drive was mailed back to the museum this week, as if it was a room key that a hotel guest found in his pocket instead of a $70,000 masterwork by a renowned Russian artist.
The painting was sent back sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard in a manila envelope, the Post reported. The museum received the envelope, which had a Brooklyn return address, on Friday. The Roerich museum, housed in a brownstone and open just a few hours a day, is dedicated to the work of the turn of the century Russian artist and writer Nicholas Roerich. Another stolen Roerich piece, “Himalayas”, is still missing. (image of “Talung Monastery” via NYPD)
