Smoke, the jazz club at 106th Street and Broadway, was out of business as of Monday, July 6, when smoke or fire from six floors above set off the sprinkler system during a set by saxophonist John Farnsworth (who is such a regular at the club he put out an album in 2007 called Live From Smoke: Monday Nights with John Farnsworth).

The sprinklers destroyed the club’s sound system, flooring, soundproofing and ceiling, owner Paul Stache told the New York Times last week. The club reopened on Wednesday and was busy on Saturday — so busy that a manager had no time to talk to a reporter about the repairs. On Saturday Grant Stewart Quartet was playing the music of Ellington and Strayhorn. Sunday is Latin night. (photo by professor bop via flickr)
